There is only a few days left to for you to ensure that all of your DCP’s have re-registered for 2010-2011.
I myself need to do my registration and update my CPD online.
A question I am always being asked is should I be paying my DCPs registration fee? This is probably a big debate! I personally feel you should pay your DCPs registration fee after all £97 can equate to two weeks worth of food for a DCP so is considered a large sum.
These are some of the reasons that I would pay my DCPs registration fee:
Long standing team member
Positive attitude
Committed to the business
No sick time or relatively – low no more than 4 days a year
I would not pay a new team members fee, but would once they had been employed for one year and points 2-4 were maintained!
What do you think? I have opened comments on this blog, so please let everyone know if you do or do not pay your DCP’s registration fee!
There is a lot of discussion between myself and dentists regarding who can whiten teeth. It seems this is a grey area as regards to the GDC too.
I advise my friends that no-one other than a trained hygienist or dentist should do their whitening, but we are all very aware that you can now have your teeth whitened in shopping centers too!
My advice to my clients who use treatment coordinators for whitening consultations is this:
To prescribe a whitening case the dentist needs to come into the consultation and assess the patient for health. If they they are suitable and have had a dental examination within the last 12 months then they are OK to have an appointment scheduled with you for the whitening . However, I do feel that if the patient tells the treatment coordinator they haven’t had an examination in over 6 months (which means the length is more realistic to 12-18 months) they the treatment coordinator must schedule an assessment with a dentist to confirm health and suitability, before scheduling a whitening appointment. This means that the dentist does not need to come into the consultation.
Last Friday I attended the world aesthetic congress and had a fabulous time. It was great to see so many familiar faces and to catch up with people that I have not seen for some time, as well as meeting new people.
WAC is one of my favorite events of the year. As always it was organised very well, the team were very friendly and helpful and the lunch was nice too! Normally the weather at WAC is great but the rain did confirm that we are having a poor start to summer! Lucky the weather improved by the end of the day which meant the networking could continue outside a bustling a local pub!
I spoke in the afternoon for the dentists and team programme and really enjoyed myself. The presentation was titled how to have a successful patient orientated practice. I have had really good feedback so far – but lets wait to see the real feedback!
Next year is the 10th WAC and I think it will be one that will knock your socks off. If you haven’t been before as a delegate then I do recommend it, book early to make a saving, and have the opportunity to network with like minded successful dentists.
In this video I will show you how I interview candidates. If you have a practice that wants a team member that is going to help to grow your practice and will work hard for you there is one simple way to assess this at the interview.
There is a story in the news today that last year employees took an average of 6 sick days each, which is the lowest figure for many years.
The reason for this, I assume is that no-one wants to put there job at risk during the last 18 months by taking time off work when they could struggle through a runny nose.
This awareness and worry for employees also spreads into them taking time off work for dental appointments. They do not want to take time off to have a check up, a clean, and especially not to have their teeth cosmetically enhanced! Which brings me back to my biggest message for dental businesses – you must have flexible opening hours if you want to gain and retain new patients.
I know practices that are open from 7 am, others that are open until 9pm and many more that are open every Saturday. One practice I know is open Monday to Friday 8-7 and every Saturday 8-3. They do close their books during the hours of 1-2 either! They have their lunch 12-1 or 2-3, and guess what – this practice is busy accepting new private patients and increasing their turnover.
In the world we now live in practices have to realise you are offering a service and if you do not offer late nights, early mornings and weekends you are limiting the number of new patients that are going to pick up the phone and make contact with you.
Normally we read about companies over promising and under delivering, but as I am happy go lucky positive person I thought I would share a story of the opposite!
Last week I decided that one of my favorite TV programmes Bones would be much better in HD. I am with Sky and am very loyal to them, I left once and would never leave them again.
I contacted Sky. Amazingly for once the phone was picked up in a couple of rings (once I had pressed several numbers to get me through to the right people), I spoke to a very happy team member in Cardiff, she processed my request and told me that the HD box would be with me by the 7th of June.
I did think that was a long time considering all they had to do was post it to me as I was installing it myself.
Today my brand new Sky HD box turned up. Once week early. Brilliant. I couldn’t be happier they have literally over delivered.
I installed the box, rang Sky as per the instructions to activate the HD channels. I was told 4-10 hours for the HD to work. Guess what – 5 minutes later is was working. Brilliant – over delivering again.
Everything that we do with our patients should be about over delivering, not over promising the same way in which Sky is keeping many of their customers happy you should endeavor to do the same.
